With gas prices climbing every time we head to the pump, a family road trip this summer doesn’t seem to be making it into everyone’s budget this year. How about a stay-cation? What’s a stay-cation you ask? A stay-cation is when you stay…and vacation…right here where you live. Take advantage of the things right here in your own town. Become a tourist….. in your backyard! What better place to do that than Orlando….one of the biggest tourist destinations in the country. Now, the trick is to do it without breaking the bank, right? That was the whole point we were making with the gas prices and all. So, here are some great ideas of fun things to do right here in town that will feel like you are on vacation, but won’t cost like you are on vacation.
Head to the Springs
Florida has a countless number of natural springs, and many have been turned into state parks for our enjoyment. Most offer swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, hiking, picnic areas, playgrounds, and many also have campgrounds. For a very small fee, some as low as $1 a person, you can enjoy a day in the park. Click here to find a spring near you.

Hello, I was checking out some of the Staycation links (I did my post on St. Augustine, FL) and I saw yours. I absolutely love Orlando and all that it has to offer. Thank you so much for joining the Staycation project. I love the suggestions that you gave. Since Orlando is just 2 hours from us, and now, seeing some budget-friendly ideas, I think we may now be able to take a trip once in a while, just to get away, yet stay close to home.

Loved your post! Just two more Farmer’s Markets to add. Ocoee has theirs on Friday nights (and a movie after the market, in the same park). Winter Garden also has a Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

We are driving to Orlando in a few weeks from Michigan. The springs look wonderful, any recommendation on one I should go to? I’d be traveling I-75 from Georgia to Orlando.

Ginny, we’ve always liked Kelly Park, (or Rock Springs) because of the tubing , but lately the water has been so low, it’s just NOT fun bumping your behind on the rocks
I would probably check out Blue Springs since some times of the year you can see manatees there. I haven’t been there since I was a kid, but I remember liking it
Have FUN!!

Winter Garden also has free concerts downtown by the fountain every Friday night beginning at 7 PM. Very family oriented! Be sure to stop by “Scoops”, located in the historic Edgwater Hotel, for an ice cream treat.. be sure to tell Mike that Cindy sent you. Downtown Winter Garden is a step back in time, you can’t help but love it. Oh I almost forgot the West Orange Trail for bikers, hikers, and skaters goes through downtown Winter Garden. Enjoy!
